The manufacture of handmade rugs began in 1950s. It was initiated by Tibetan refugees, who fled into Nepal after Chinese invasion on their homeland. Tibetans were settled in refugee camps and having multiple problems such as no land to farm, focused on making Tibetan carpets by traditional means. This activity coincided with foreign tourism in Nepal at that time to trek the beautiful Himalayas, which provided the refugees perfect platform and a booming market for their rugs to sell, as the business grew in larger proportions refugees from Tibet began to hire Nepalese people and bestow their knowledge upon them of traditional Tibetan style of making rugs by hand.
Today, the handmade rugs trade is a major industry in Nepal, producing immense variation of rugs, ranging in pattern from traditional Tibetan motifs to the latest western contemporary designs. Currently, the industry and trade of rugs is one of the largest export business supplied to foreign countries, It’s because of the finest quality of rugs made by impeccable craftsmanship of Nepalese artisans which lasts for generations and low cost of labors from our country.
